In honor of the 80th anniversary of the Russian Scientific Center "Applied Chemistry"

prof. B.Maximov

The Russian Scientific Center "Applied Chemistry"( St.-Petersburg), the largest Russian organization in chemistry, was founded  in 1919 as the Russian Institute of Applied Chemistry.

The best representatives of domestic chemical science, academicians N.S. Kurnakov , V.N. Ipatiev , A.V.Favorsky , V.E. Tischenko , A.E. Porai-Koshits  etc., were the founders of the institute.

In 1925 the Russian Institute of Applied Chemistry was given a new name of State Institute of Applied Chemistry (SIAC) and in 1992 the Russian Scientific Center "Applied Chemistry" was established on the basis of the SIAC.

The establishment of the first research institute in our country had to initiate development and establishment of the most important chemical plants.

At present the structure of RSC AC consists of the research institute, experimental plant, design institute and its branch in Perm-city and is a state research organization of federal subjection. The research staff of RSC AC comprises over 3.5 thousands of university graduates and highly skilled professionals, including 10 academicians and corresponding members of Russian Academies, 30 professors and over 300 Ph.D.

The RSC "Applied Chemistry" carries out actual and perspective research projects in the field of applied chemistry. In particular the following have been developed:

  • technologies of many ozone safe chladons, novel fluorine containing products of different purpose: fluoroolefins, fluorine compounds with functional groups, inert fluorocarbons.
  • novel technologies of fine organic synthesis
  • scientific basis of engineering methods of industrial safety at chemical facilities
  • advanced energy-efficient and environmentally safe technologies of main organic synthesis
  • production strategy and elemental basis for flexible automated productions etc.

The RSC "Applied Chemistry" participates in the following research projects under both federal and international programs such as:

  • replacement of ozone depleting chladones by ozone safe ones ( according to the Montreal protocol )
  • ecology and rational nature management
  • novel materials and chemicals
  • informational technologies etc.

The RSC "Applied Chemistry" is a leader in many branches of chemistry in Russia. The Center has a unique basis of experimental plants of different purposes which allow to carry out research and experimental development works in different directions for space technologies, environmentally safe production and also to produce chemicals of high purity based on  Hi-Fi technologies.

The RSC "Applied Chemistry" closely cooperates with institutes of Russian Academy of Science in fundamental research. The staff of the Center participate actively in scientific conferences and symposiums, in particular international conferences "Chemistry, technology and application of fluorine-containing compounds in industry" (CTAF) in 1994 and 1997 were held with the active participation of RSC "Applied Chemistry".

The RSC "Applied Chemistry" has been cooperating for many years with many well-known world companies such as Bayer AG, 3M, ICI, Rhon Poulenc etc.

The establishment of the Russian-Chinese joint venture in China for the production of tetrafluoroethylene and other fluorocompounds has been a vary important achievement in the recent years.

Due to the continuos improvement of technologies, longstanding practice of highly- skilled experts , the RSC AC holds its high positions in the main fields of modern applied chemistry.
